Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a North Lauderdale mother on Tuesday, Nov. 3, after her two young children were nearly struck by a vehicle on Tam O’Shanter Boulevard in the 7500 block. A man who saw the children standing in the middle of the street told deputies they pointed toward their home.
The mother, Janay Traeshawn Readon, 38, was away from home and had left the children with her 15-year-old son, according to the arrest report. Neighbors said the children went back inside and locked the door. Deputies needed several tries before the children unlocked it.
Inside, deputies found the teen asleep in a rear bedroom with headphones on. He did not respond right away and seemed disoriented when he woke up, the report said. Readon told deputies she knew her adult daughter had to leave for work and had arranged for her son to watch the younger children.
The 5-year-old has autism and the 3-year-old has epilepsy. Deputies said both need extra care and supervision. The report counts this as the third time in less than two months that children were left unsupervised. In September, a child walked out the front door to go to a park, and in October, two children were found alone at a playground behind North Lauderdale Elementary School.
Readon was arrested at her home on two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. Her bond was set at $500 per count, or $1,000 total.
