Gwar is bringing its first South Florida show in three years to Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and frontman Blöthar the Berserker is talking about the band’s past and present. Michael Bishop, the man behind the costume and growls, told Miami New Times that he started out as a church choir singer outside Richmond, Virginia, before getting hooked on rock ‘n’ roll.
Bishop joined Gwar as its bassist in 1987, when the group was shifting from an art project into a touring act. He said the metal scene was slow to accept the band, partly because Gwar had mocked metal in its early days. He now says most metal fans accept the band.
Before the Fort Lauderdale date, Gwar will sail on the Headbangers Boat for a four-day Caribbean cruise. The show is part of the Gor Gor Must Die! Tour, which includes a giant dinosaur battle and giant robots, according to Bishop.
Bishop also addressed a claim that the Secret Service investigated the band after it burned an effigy of President Donald Trump. He said the band had beheaded an Elon Musk effigy at a show, and that his comment to reporters about Gwar being on a list was later misread as a Trump threat.
The show starts at 6 p.m. at Revolution Live, 100 SW 3rd Ave. Tickets cost $45 to $135 through Ticketmaster.
