Wynwood is marking Día de los Muertos with a neighborhoodwide art walk that runs through Nov. 8. Sixteen businesses are each building an ofrenda, the candlelit altar families traditionally set up to welcome departed loved ones home for a visit.

The altars make up the Wynwood Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Trail, a free, self-guided walk presented by the Wynwood Business Improvement District with the Mexican Cultural Institute of the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami. Each altar sits inside its business, often near the front window, with a short note about who it honors.

The honorees range widely. Morelia Paletas is remembering Celia Cruz, Moxy Miami Wynwood is honoring Selena, and Wynwood Shop is recognizing Dolly Parton. Jimi Hendrix has an altar at 27 Club Coffee, and Häagen-Dazs is remembering Reuben and Rose Mattus, who founded the company in 1960. Two altars honor animals, including one at COYO Taco for beloved pets and another at SPAW for a pet named Major.

The consulate is also running its annual Day of the Dead Altar Challenge. Participating businesses that meet the requirements must register with the consulate by Nov. 6. The winning altar will be recognized through the Embassy of Mexico and featured in Casa de México magazine.

The Wynwood BID plans to make the trail an annual event and expects to bring in galleries, hotels and artists next year. Details are available on the Wynwood website.
