Heavy morning downpours on Election Day flooded the Paradise Village neighborhood in Davie, trapping residents and forcing election officials to move the polling site. Voters from Paradise Village are now directed to Tree Tops Park instead of their original precinct.
Resident Lori Soucier said many neighbors, including her daughter, could not leave home without a high-clearance vehicle. Some voters received text alerts about the change, but Soucier said others, herself included, found no signs at the original location and had to search online to find the new site.
Flooding also led officials to move Precinct E10 to Mullins Hall in Coral Springs.
A separate technical problem briefly disrupted early voting countywide. The feature meant to confirm voters receive the correct ballot failed, prompting worries that some people had been handed the wrong one. The Broward Supervisor of Elections’ office said that did not happen and that the safeguard, put in place because redistricting split precincts with different ballot features, worked in the August primary. Officials said the system issue is resolved. They are asking anyone who left during the outage to return to their precinct before 7 p.m. The office said 45,000 votes were cast in Broward in the first three hours, and it does not know how many voters were affected by the outage.
Polls in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties close at 7 p.m. Officials urge voters to confirm their precinct on their county Supervisor of Elections website before leaving home. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
