The Detroit Red Wings beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Monday night in Sunrise, scoring twice in 45 seconds early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie.

Justin Faulk put Detroit ahead 3-2 at 2:08 of the third on a power-play goal. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård followed 45 seconds later with a shot from deep in the slot that beat Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom over the glove.

Carter Mazur scored his first NHL goal to open the scoring for Detroit, and Alex DeBrincat added his seventh of the season. Emmitt Finnie added an empty-net goal with three seconds left. Former Panthers backup Daniil Tarasov stopped 23 shots for the win.

Aaron Ekblad scored his first goal of the season for Florida, a short-handed tally, and Sam Reinhart netted his eighth. Sam Bennett also scored for the Panthers, who never led. Markstrom made 24 saves in his first game since Oct. 17.

The loss snapped Florida’s three-game winning streak. Detroit improved to 6-2-1 in its last nine games but remains tied for the fewest points in the Atlantic Division, one of the tightest divisions in the NHL right now.

The Panthers host Chicago on Wednesday night. The Red Wings play at Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
