The Coast Guard’s Miami sector detained the MSC Poesia cruise ship on Sunday for inspection at the Port of Miami. Passengers remain aboard, and the ship’s itinerary is on hold while inspectors work.
In a statement to CBS News on Monday, the Coast Guard said its teams are verifying the ship’s compliance with international standards and U.S. regulations. The agency said its Captain of the Port priority is the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel and the environment.
MSC Cruises said the ship’s departure has been delayed while the inspection continues. The company said it is cooperating with authorities and will keep guests updated on the expected departure time, though it did not provide further details.
The Poesia can carry more than 3,200 passengers and over 1,000 crew members. The company did not say how many people were on board, and the Coast Guard has not released a timeline for finishing the inspection.
For travelers and families with plans tied to the ship, the hold means schedule changes are likely until the Coast Guard clears the vessel to sail.
