The U.S. has carried out defensive strikes on some Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. official said Monday. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Iranian state television reported explosions on Qeshm Island. The official said the targets included Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against U.S. assets.

The strikes appeared limited rather than a return to full hostilities. They came the day before crucial midterm elections. President Donald Trump had previously said the U.S. would not launch strikes on Iran before the midterms.

The Iran war has been unpopular, and its effects on gasoline prices and the broader economy have become a political vulnerability for Republicans as they work to keep control of Congress.

Earlier Monday, Vice President JD Vance told reporters he had just spoken with Trump about talks with Iran. He said he and the president both feel fairly good about the prospects for a negotiated settlement.
