The Coral Springs Charter swim team made school history on Wednesday, with the girls winning their first District Championship and the boys finishing second, according to Coral Springs Talk.

The Panthers girls scored 380 points to win by 27.5. Sixth-grade diver Samantha Mock took first with 304.20 points. Freshman Jamila Rashad won both the 50-yard freestyle (24.91) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.25), and sophomore Addie Gardner took the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.34). The girls also had three relay teams finish second.

The boys totaled 354 points, 22 behind the winners. Senior Brian Hamilton won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, and fellow senior John Albornoz took the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Anthony Palumbo won the 100-yard backstroke, and the boys also won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The team is young, with 19 middle school students and 13 high school students, eight of them seniors. Head Coach Sheri Wells-Smith said this is the first season she has coached more middle schoolers than high schoolers in 11 years of coaching.

“I’m so proud of this team,” Wells-Smith said, adding that she expects the swim and dive program to keep growing.
