Democratic Rep. Debra Tendrich is asking voters in House District 89 for a second term, pointing to bipartisan work she did in her first year in Tallahassee. She faces Republican Cathy Higgins, a former Atlantis mayor and city council member. Election Day is Nov. 3.
The district covers an inland section of Palm Beach County, including all or parts of Atlantis, Greenacres, Lake Clarke Shores, Lake Worth Beach and Palm Springs. Democrats make up 38% of the electorate, Republicans 29% and independents and third-party voters 33%. Tendrich won in 2024 by nearly 3 percentage points, and Kamala Harris carried the district by about a point that year.
Tendrich, 40, says she wants to work across the aisle. She sponsored a domestic violence package that passed unanimously in both chambers, with co-sponsors Rep. Danny Nix and Sen. Alexis Calatayud, both Republicans. Her bill to use “Judea and Samaria” in state materials passed the House with 14 Democrats voting no, and it died in the Senate.
Higgins, 57, served 12 years on the Atlantis City Council, including three as the city’s first woman mayor. Her platform focuses on household costs, law enforcement, limits on government spending and development controls. She also backs competitive teacher pay and school choice.
Through mid-October, Tendrich had raised more than $139,000 and had about $100,500 on hand. Higgins had raised close to $78,000 and reported roughly $52,500 remaining as of Oct. 16. Both candidates also received in-kind help from their parties.
