The Miami Heat teamed up with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections and Miami-Dade College on Thursday to help young people cast their first ballots. The event, called “My Future. My Voice. My Vote.,” was held at MDC’s Kendall campus.

About 700 registered students voted for the first time during the event, according to the organizers.

Former Heat star Glen Rice spoke to the students and urged them to take part. “They need to understand that their vote counts,” he said, telling young voters that voting is their right and that they are the future.

The day ended with a pep rally to celebrate youth participation in the voting process.
