A woman was shot and killed by her former partner, who then killed himself, at a 55-and-over apartment complex in northeast Miami-Dade on Wednesday night, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Denise Polo Fuentes went to the complex near Northeast 14th Avenue and 170th Street shortly after 7 p.m. to collect her belongings. Investigators said the man, Frank Paba, shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

Polo Fuentes’ cousin, Maria Espinosa, said she was with Polo Fuentes and their aunt at the time. Speaking through a translation of her remarks from Spanish, Espinosa said Paba was not acting like himself and told them everyone would die that night. She said she begged him to let the three women leave, pleading that they had children. She said Paba shot Polo Fuentes in the heart and then shot himself.

Paba’s sister, Yolima Paba, said the two had not been together for about two months. A neighbor who knew the couple said Polo Fuentes had told her she was done with Paba. The neighbor said the area is usually quiet.

It is not yet clear whether the two had past domestic incidents. CBS News Miami said it had asked the Sheriff’s Office for more information and was waiting for a response.
