Several Grammy winners, nominees and industry professionals spent a day with students from multiple Miami high schools at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. The visit was part of the Grammy Museum’s “Grammy in the Schools” program.
Songwriter Poo Bear, whose credits include “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, “Caught Up” by Usher and “What Do You Mean” by Justin Bieber, was among the guests. Students said hearing from people who started where they did gave them a clearer picture of the music business and what it takes to get there.
Arin Cambolat of the Grammy Museum said the program focuses on the business side of music as well as performance, including songwriting, production and music business. Students worked through songwriting exercises and mixed beats with a music producer during workshops.
The museum partnered with Young Musicians United, a Miami-Dade organization that provides free music education in schools. Julian Bermudez of the group said the goal goes beyond instruments to show students the range of careers in the industry.
The Grammy in the Schools program runs at schools across the country throughout the academic year.
