Voters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will decide on Nov. 3 whether to renew local property tax measures that help fund public schools, and district leaders are urging a yes vote.

In Miami-Dade, the Secure Our Future referendum pays for teacher and staff pay, along with school safety and security. Superintendent Rafael Villalobos said losing the money would make it harder to keep high-quality teachers, especially with the local cost of living. The measure first passed in 2018 and was renewed in 2022. It is set to expire in July 2027 unless voters approve it. On the ballot it is Question 268, and approval would extend it through June 30, 2031.

In Broward, the Secure the Next Generation referendum renews an existing $1 million property tax, according to Superintendent Howard Hepburn. He said it is not a new tax or an additional millage rate. Officials said the money helps pay for teacher and staff supplements, more than 390 school safety personnel and over 220 mental health professionals. Without renewal, the district stands to lose about $358 million a year. The Broward question is School Board Question #1, and approval would extend the funding through Dec. 31, 2030.

Anna Fusco, president of the Broward Teachers Union, said the measure benefits everyone and eases pressure on educators and families.
