Elon Musk has become the biggest known donor in this year’s midterm elections, giving more than $276 million since July to help Republicans hold their majorities in Congress. Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for Musk’s super PAC, confirmed the figures, which were first reported by The New York Times ahead of this week’s federal filing deadline.
The largest share, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates. Another $76 million went to America PAC, Musk’s own super PAC, which is building a large turnout operation similar to the one it ran to help elect President Donald Trump in 2024. Musk also gave $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton in Texas.
The spending marks a sharp reversal. In May, Musk said he intended to cut back on political spending, saying, “I think I’ve done enough.” He has also kept a lower profile than in 2024, when he appeared on stage with Trump at rallies. Musk and Trump had a falling out when Musk left the government, but they have since reconciled, and Trump presented him with the National Medal of Science last week.
Republicans hold a large fundraising advantage over Democrats, a rare bright spot for a party facing possible heavy losses. Voters have expressed deep frustration over the president’s performance, high prices and the unpopular war with Iran.
