Six Parkland students will spend the 2026-27 school year learning how city government works through the city’s Mayor for a Month program. The mayor and City Commission welcomed the group during the Oct. 7 commission meeting.

The participants are sixth graders Austin Sheir and Ayansh Shah, seventh grader Aarna Mishra, ninth grader Blake Barrett, 10th grader Aarav Goyani and 12th grader Sebastian Cabral.

The program lets students shadow the mayor, attend commission meetings and take part in city events. Organizers say the goal is for the students to observe city leadership and learn about the decisions that affect their community.

The mix of grade levels, from middle school through senior year, gives the group a range of exposure to local government over the course of the year.
