Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are coordinating security plans for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, set for Dec. 14 and 15 at Trump National Doral. The U.S. Secret Service is in charge of security because the event has been designated a National Special Security Event.

At a media briefing Wednesday, officials outlined months of preparation involving the Secret Service, the FBI, FEMA, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, the city of Doral, and regional transportation and airport authorities. Mike Townsend of the Secret Service’s Miami field office said the region’s selection reflects its role as an international gateway.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the area’s experience hosting major events has prepared it for this one. Law enforcement leaders said the G20 presents security challenges that differ from large sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, because of the high level of protection for the leaders attending.

Officials have not released a complete guest list. The event could draw leaders from countries involved in ongoing international conflicts, and President Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Residents and visitors should expect road closures, traffic detours and restricted-access zones in and around Doral. Updates on traffic will be shared through the City of Doral and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, though some security measures may be announced with little notice.
