A Miami Dade College freshman who was badly hurt in a crash outside the school’s Kendall Campus is still working her way back, according to her mother, Amanda Martinez.
Rosa Flores, 19, was a passenger in a car on Sept. 3 when a truck struck the vehicle as it turned into the campus, Martinez said. Flores was taken to a hospital in critical condition and spent three weeks in a medically induced coma. Doctors operated on her to drain bleeding inside her skull, and she had bruising across her body.
Flores has undergone several surgeries. Her mother said doctors told her she will have to relearn how to walk, swallow and speak. She still uses a feeding tube and is at a rehab facility.
Martinez said she quit her job to care for her daughter full time. “I don’t know when I’m going to be able to work again,” she said. “She needs assistance 24/7.”
Flores was studying toward a career in MRI technology. Martinez said she believes her daughter will fully recover and return to school. She hopes the story serves as a reminder to drive safely. The family has set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who wants to help.
