Palm Beach County will designate a school zone along a busy stretch of Haverhill Road across from Greenacres Elementary School, after parents raised concerns about children crossing the road. The county’s Engineering and Public Works department told WPTV the change is coming, and both the school zone and a new crosswalk are expected to be ready by early next year.
The road has a 40 mph speed limit where it borders the school, and there is no designated school zone or crosswalk there. The school already has a school zone on Jackson Avenue with a 20 mph limit during arrival and dismissal. The nearest guarded crosswalks are near Greenacres Christian Academy and at 10th Avenue and Swain Boulevard.
Engineering and Public Works said a pedestrian safety study found an additional crosswalk is needed to serve the school. The county is considering placing it at Haverhill Road and either Carver Street or Fourth Street, and it would be guarded. The City of Greenacres said it will fund the crossing guards but not the rest of the project. The city also asked for flashing signals or beacons to improve visibility for students and crossing guards.
WPTV reporter Christy Waite said she saw children and families navigating traffic and students riding e-bikes and scooters near the road, and she witnessed a crash there. The county has not said how much the project will cost.
