Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead at her home Wednesday morning, and her husband, 40-year-old Stephen Bowen, was taken into custody, police said. Officers found her body around 10 a.m. after a welfare check, according to Police Chief Brad Mock, who spoke at a news conference Wednesday evening.
Mock did not say how Bowen died. He said the case is being investigated as a domestic violence incident. Authorities said there are no other suspects and no threat to the public. Police said the investigation is ongoing and did not release further details.
Bowen was elected to the commission in 2020 and again in 2024. She was the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve on the Coral Springs commission, and she was appointed in November to a second term as vice mayor. Before that, she worked for the city of Tamarac, and she was known as an advocate for the Haitian community.
Her family posted a statement on Instagram describing her as a sister, daughter and friend whose warmth filled every room. Tamarac Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton called her a friend and said the state had lost an advocate. Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen said her public service would be felt across the county.
City Manager Catherine Givens called the day a dark one for Coral Springs. Tamarac plans to honor Bowen at its next commission meeting.
