Newly released body camera video shows what a Coral Springs police officer did in the minutes after a crash that killed 6-year-old Harlow Tran in May 2024. NBC6 Investigates obtained the footage, which begins at 5:06 p.m., about a minute after the crash.
The video shows Officer John Daddino stepping out of his patrol car at the intersection, then driving to a Mercedes that had stopped nearby. Bystanders shouted that there was a baby in another car. Harlow was still strapped into her car seat after being thrown from an SUV driven by her great-grandmother. Daddino radioed for help and told witnesses to stand by. He reached the girl about three minutes after the crash, at 5:08 p.m., and began rescue efforts before other officers and fire-rescue crews arrived.
Harlow’s parents are suing the city, alleging Daddino started a “dangerous” pursuit over a minor window tint violation. The city says no pursuit was started and that Daddino turned off his lights and siren as department policy requires. Federal crash data, however, lists “police pursuit” as a factor. Surveillance video shows the Mercedes, which was traveling 107 mph seconds before impact, and the patrol car following it with emergency lights that appear to be off before the collision.
Harlow’s mother, Samari Curbelo, questioned why the officer did not go to her daughter sooner. Daddino wrote in his report that he was not aware anyone in the SUV was hurt when he arrived.
The city declined to comment beyond its court filings. Daddino, who is not a defendant, declined to comment through his union. The suspected driver, Chevon Graham, remains jailed awaiting trial and has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges.
