Dogs and their owners gathered at Countess de Hoernle Park on Saturday, Oct. 24, for Boca Raton’s inaugural Howl-O-Ween, a free, family-friendly Halloween celebration. Visitors came from Boca Raton and neighboring cities for the city’s first event built around dogs.

The idea grew out of the city’s recognition as a Better Cities for Pets community, a designation tied to a Mars Petcare program. Boca Raton has been adding events aimed at its four-legged residents.

The morning included the Muttville Comix Dog Show, a Howl-O-Weener Dog Race Contest and a costume contest. Some owners matched outfits with their dogs, and others dressed pairs of dogs in matching costumes. A photo booth, crafts, a Paw Spa and a relaxation lounge were also open.

The Trail of Treats gave participating dogs a chance to collect treats and samples from local pet businesses and community supporters. Free services included ear cleaning, teeth cleaning and nail trimming.

Eight sponsors provided services, giveaways and prizes. The best overall costume winner will receive a custom dog suit or gown, and the first-place wiener-dog racer will take home a custom dog bed. Three animal welfare groups attended, and two brought adoptable dogs. The groups were Everglades Angels Dog Rescue, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue and Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue.

For residents, the event showcased pet amenities the city already offers, including Mizner Bark Dog Park, Bark Beach at Spanish River Park and the walking trail around the lake at Countess de Hoernle Park.

The city said the event brought together residents, visitors, businesses and rescue groups to highlight Boca Raton as a welcoming place for dogs and their owners.
