An 18-year-old student at Miami Carol City Senior High School appeared in bond court after authorities said he brought a gun onto campus. Thomas Torrez is charged with possessing a firearm on school property.

Authorities said they received a tip that someone at the school had a gun. When officers approached Torrez, he told them he did not have a weapon or a backpack.

Officials then reviewed surveillance video, which showed he had a bag, according to the source report. A weapon was recovered on campus.

A judge set his bond at $2,500.

The arrest comes as school districts across Miami-Dade have been stressing campus safety. Parents and students who rely on tips from classmates and staff are reminded that reporting concerns quickly can help officers respond before a situation escalates.
