Coconut Creek is preparing for possible budget shortfalls after Florida voters approved Amendment 3, according to Mayor Joshua Rydell Wasserman. The amendment changes property taxes beginning in the 2027-28 fiscal year.
In a Facebook statement, Wasserman said the measure is meant to give homeowners financial relief, but it could also shrink the revenue local governments use to pay for essential services and community programs. He said the city began planning for those changes months before the election.
During a strategic planning workshop earlier this year, the City Commission and staff mapped out a three-phase approach to possible funding cuts. The city has already started reviewing vacant positions before filling them, cutting discretionary spending and delaying some capital projects. Officials are also pursuing grants and other funding sources.
The City Commission plans additional workshops over the next year to review the budget and decide how to protect services residents rely on. Wasserman said difficult decisions may be needed, and he promised residents would be kept informed and given a chance to weigh in.
