Democrat Oliver Gilbert III has won Florida’s 24th Congressional District, CBS News projected on Tuesday night. He defeated Republican Te Mayonna Brown in the Nov. 3 general election for the open seat that longtime U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson gave up when she chose not to seek reelection.

The district covers predominantly Black and Hispanic communities in northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward counties. Those include Miami Gardens, Opa-locka, North Miami, Little Haiti, Brownsville, West Park, Pembroke Park and parts of Miramar and Miami. Write-in candidate Patricia Gonzalez and no-party candidate Andy Daro also qualified for the general election.

Gilbert won a crowded seven-candidate Democratic primary in August. His closest challenger, state Sen. Shevrin Jones, conceded on primary night. Gilbert has served on the Miami-Dade County Commission since 2020 and previously was mayor of Miami Gardens. He also worked as an assistant state attorney in Broward and in private practice.

During the primary, Gilbert said housing, gas and grocery costs were the top concerns for voters. He proposed lowering the Medicare eligibility age and raising Medicaid income limits to expand health care access. Wilson, who has represented the district since 2011, endorsed him to replace her.
