A 65-year-old Coral Springs man was arrested Nov. 1 on charges of domestic battery by strangulation and robbery by sudden snatching, according to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report. Angel Sabino Ajila Sanchez was taken to the Broward County Main Jail.
Officers were called around 6:12 a.m. after a caller reported seeing a woman jump from a moving vehicle and run toward him for help at the Mobil gas station at 10739 West Atlantic Boulevard. The caller told dispatchers the vehicle sped north on Coral Springs Drive after she got out.
The woman told investigators that an argument in the car escalated when Ajila Sanchez called her a derogatory name. She said that when she started recording, he grabbed her phone and began choking her. She pushed him away, got out and ran to a bystander at the gas station. Officers said they saw fresh marks on the front and side of her neck that matched her account.
Police found a white Kia Sportage in the Exxon parking lot at 2290 Coral Springs Drive and detained Ajila Sanchez there. In an interview with a detective, he denied any physical altercation and denied taking the phone, which the report says was found in his vehicle. Investigators also noted fresh scratches on him that they described as consistent with self-defense, and the report says he changed his initial account when asked about them.
Police completed a domestic violence lethality assessment that rated the woman’s situation as potentially lethal and forwarded it to Women In Distress. The charges are allegations at this stage.
