The City of Deerfield Beach and Filthy Organics are inviting residents to the annual Pumpkin Smash on Friday, Nov. 6, starting at 6 p.m. at Quiet Waters Athletic Park, 4200 W Hillsboro Blvd. The smash happens before that night’s Movies in the Park.

Residents bring their old pumpkins and smash them on site with tools the city and Filthy Organics provide. The company then collects the pumpkins and processes them into nutrient-rich compost.

The city said an estimated 1.3 billion pounds of U.S. pumpkins end up in landfills each year, and the event is meant to keep some of that waste out of them.

Residents who cannot attend the Nov. 6 event can drop their pumpkins in the food waste bin at the Drop-Off Center during regular hours. More information is available at deerfield-beach.com/doc.
