Two Spanish River High School wide receivers are preparing to play college football next year. Derek Goulbourne has committed to Army, and Jayden Elder has committed to Florida International University, WPTV reported.
Goulbourne started playing football only four years ago, after his mother cleared him to try out as a freshman. He said he is headed to West Point on a full scholarship and is focused on learning from veterans and making an impact. Elder has played since he was 6 and said earning a roster spot and a commitment to FIU felt like a weight lifted off his chest.
Head coach Nick LaSala said Goulbourne is a versatile player who can line up at tight end in some situations and is one of the smartest players on the offense. LaSala said game film has helped college coaches see both players, since they could not watch every practice.
The Sharks won the 6A District 14 title for the second straight year and are undefeated against district opponents. They are 5-3 overall and close the regular season Friday. Their final home game is Nov. 4.
