A 16-year-old Miami boy is facing charges as an adult, including attempted second-degree murder, in a August 1 shooting in Little Havana, according to arrest reports obtained by Local 10 News on Thursday.
Miami police said Raymond Rodriguez was first investigated for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but the charge was upgraded. He also faces a separate count of third-degree grand theft of a firearm. Police arrested him on Sept. 2, after detectives from the Miami Police Department’s Firearms Intelligence Unit developed him as a suspect.
Officers were called to the area of Northwest Ninth Street and 22nd Avenue around 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 1 after reports of gunfire. They found no victims, witnesses or suspects at the time. The next day, a man reported bullet holes in his blue 2009 Infiniti M35X, and a second victim told detectives he was walking south on Northwest 22nd Avenue when a white Ford Explorer pulled up beside him.
According to the report, Rodriguez got out of the passenger side and fired a black handgun, and the victim took cover behind the parked Infiniti and returned fire. Investigators said the suspects fled in the SUV. Surveillance video and license plate reader data helped detectives track the vehicle.
On Sept. 2, detectives searched Rodriguez’s home and recovered clothing matching what he wore in the footage, live .40-caliber ammunition and a 9 mm Glock 43. Police said the gun had been reported stolen in another Miami case. The report says Rodriguez waived his Miranda rights, confessed to the shooting and admitted he knew the gun was stolen and paid $950 for it.
As of Thursday morning, Rodriguez was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center with bond listed as pending. The motive for the shooting is not known.
