A Boynton Beach man was shot in the ankle Tuesday morning after he refused a demand for his belongings outside a store on South Congress Avenue, according to Boynton Beach police.

The incident happened just after 11 a.m. at 1610 South Congress Avenue. Police said the victim had left the store and was walking to his vehicle when a man he did not know approached, pressed a gun into his back and demanded his property. When the victim refused, police said, the gunman shot him and fired several more rounds as the victim ran. The suspect then drove off in a silver Nissan. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Detectives identified the suspect and the car quickly. With help from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office aviation unit, investigators located the Nissan near the 1000 block of Southwest 27th Place. Police said the suspect left a home there in an Uber and went to a residence in Palm Springs, where Christopher Carlos Porta was arrested without incident.

Porta faces charges of attempted murder and robbery with a firearm. He is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail. The South Florida Criminal Apprehension Team and the sheriff’s office TAC Team also assisted. Charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
