Toney, 19, passed the 13 catches he had recorded in Miami’s season opener against Stanford. He also raised his season total to 11 receiving touchdowns. He left briefly in the first half with an apparent right ankle injury but returned to score.
Quarterback Darian Mensah completed 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Freshman running back Javian Mallory scored twice, and Mark Fletcher Jr. also ran for a score, with the two combining for 88 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.
Pittsburgh quarterback Holden Geriner found Cataurus “Blue” Hicks for a 36-yard touchdown early in the second half, and Cam Sapp caught a 49-yard score late in the game. Miami’s defense forced a fumble and stopped Pittsburgh on fourth down near the goal line.
Miami outgained Pittsburgh 506 yards to 403. The Hurricanes, now 7-0 and 5-0 in the ACC, were wearing their 2001 throwback uniforms. They host North Carolina next Saturday.
