A bond court exchange between a Broward County judge and a domestic battery suspect has drawn attention online after the judge turned the hearing toward cooking.

The suspect, Christopher Johnson, was arrested on Monday after Sunrise police said he argued with his ex-girlfriend and the argument turned violent. Police said Johnson pulled the woman’s hair and punched her in the mouth, busting her lip.

At his bond hearing, Judge Allison Gilman learned Johnson works as a chef and asked where he worked and what his specialty was. She then asked what he would cook for her. Johnson said a steak on the grill, and he demonstrated the turning motion with his hands, saying “ten o’clock, two o’clock.” Gilman said she often either burned steaks on the outside or overcooked them.

The conversation shifted back to the case when Gilman asked whether Johnson could post a $1,500 bond. He said he could. She said she would have to visit Slackers, the restaurant where he works, because there were so many restaurants she needed to try.

Johnson has since bonded out of jail. He has been ordered not to have contact with the victim.
