Miramar police have arrested a 32-year-old man accused of trying to kidnap a 13-year-old girl near a gas station on South State Road 7. Surveillance video of the attempt has been released.

Police said Michael E. Polanco grabbed the girl from behind as she walked home and put her in a headlock while trying to walk away with her. A good Samaritan intervened by yelling at Polanco, and that gave the teen a chance to break free and get help.

Polanco was charged with kidnapping and battery. He appeared in court Tuesday and is being held without bond.

The case comes as parents in the area are being reminded to watch children walking alone, especially in the evening hours. Police have not said whether additional suspects are being sought.
