A West Palm Beach woman is organizing a walk this Saturday in Boca Raton to raise awareness of Huntington’s disease and money for families affected by it.

Madison Donovan says her husband, Brian, was diagnosed with the disease at age 21, four years ago. She is helping organize the Hope for HD Walk, which begins at 9 a.m. outside the Spanish River Library.

Huntington’s disease is a hereditary and progressive neurological disease that can affect movement and behavior, Donovan said. She said she wants people to understand that the condition is not only a rare disease. She said it affects everyday families.

The walk aims to raise $10,000. Donovan said organizers have already reached halfway to that goal. Proceeds will benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

For South Florida residents, the event offers a chance to learn about a hereditary condition that can change daily life for patients and their families, and to support local fundraising efforts.
