Russian strikes killed at least 11 people in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region on Saturday, officials said, one day after President Donald Trump announced a deal to buy diesel from Russia. Three children were among the dead, according to Mykhailo Semikin, head of the regional military administration. Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the region’s defense council, said at least 16 people were wounded when aerial bombs hit residential buildings.
The attacks are part of a long-range aerial war while ground armies remain largely deadlocked more than four and a half years after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Ukrainian officials said Russian bombardments have killed more than 60 people over the past four days.
Trump said Friday that he reached the diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call that had been expected to focus on a suspected plague case in Russia. He said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, with more shipments scheduled for November and later. The move runs counter to a sanctions law he signed last month targeting Russian oil and gas revenue, and it comes as the administration seeks to ease high fuel prices before the midterm elections.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the deal would help Russia prolong the war. He called it a weak decision by strong partners. The announcement came as envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Ukrainian officials in Miami to discuss a proposal to end the war.
