A man who ran to help after a deadly crash in Palm Springs says he held the driver in his arms until emergency crews arrived. The crash happened Wednesday, Oct. 14, at South Congress Avenue and Second Avenue North, according to Palm Springs police.
Police said a motorcycle struck a red Toyota Corolla driven by Frances Campion, 94, who died. The motorcyclist survived. Kelvin McMiller, who was waiting to cross the intersection after getting off work, told WPBF 25 News he heard a loud boom and ran toward the scene. He said the motorcyclist had gone through the driver’s side window and landed inside the car. McMiller called 911 and stayed with Campion, who was unresponsive, as other bystanders, including a woman he believed was a nurse, tried to help.
Campion’s family had been planning a surprise party for her 95th birthday next month. Her daughter described her as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. McMiller said he has since spoken with the daughter for more than an hour and has been invited to her funeral service.
Police are asking anyone who saw the crash or has video of it to contact Officer Fardella at 561-584-8369 or BFardella@vpsfl.org. A police spokesperson said the investigation is still active and the cause has not been determined.
