Newly released video shows Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies racing to reach a fatal airboat crash in the Everglades, miles from land. Rescue crews responded on the evening of Oct. 2 to reports of two airboats colliding about 14 miles southwest of Mile Marker 41.
Two men were hurt. Crews reached them by air and water, with BSO Marine Patrol, the Aviation Unit and other units working together to find the crash site and begin lifesaving efforts.
Lt. Danny Gans of Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue said one patient was dead at the scene when crews arrived. The other man was classified as a Level 1 trauma patient. First responders hoisted him into a helicopter and flew him to an area hospital. Deputies said he is expected to recover.
The second man, Alessandro Borgo, did not survive. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
BSO said the operation shows how training and partnership between agencies can provide lifesaving help to Broward residents.
