Homestead police, working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, arrested two people accused of being behind a series of mail thefts across the city. Detectives spent several weeks looking into reports of stolen mail before they identified a suspect and a vehicle tied to the cases.
Early Thursday, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 400 block of East Mowry Drive about stolen mail. They soon spotted the suspected vehicle heading north on North Homestead Boulevard and tried a traffic stop. The driver did not stop, and the pursuit ended when the car crashed into another vehicle and hit a tree near SW 296 Street and U.S. 1.
Police said the driver, 35-year-old Brandon Mathew Morgan, ran from the scene and was caught shortly afterward. His passenger, 19-year-old Teisha Richardson, was arrested at the crash site. Detectives found evidence of mail theft inside the vehicle.
Both face 34 counts of mail theft and additional related charges. Each was given a $128,000 bond.
