Tamarac will get a new two-story community center at Eastside Community Park, after city commissioners approved a site plan at their October 14 meeting. The 12,670-square-foot building will replace the former Shaker Village Clubhouse and includes a tennis court, basketball court, playground and parking.
Mayor Michelle J. Gomez said the building itself was good, but she was strongly critical of the parking. She said the 50 spaces planned for the site will not be nearly enough for the large social and business events expected inside.
Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton praised city staff and said nearby parks, including Caporella Park, will provide plenty of parking. Commissioner Morey Wright said the project gets rid of an old building that had become an eyesore.
The clubhouse, which had a pool, tennis courts, shuffleboard courts and a boat ramp, fell into disrepair after its roof was removed in 2017. The city lacked the money to finish repairs, and the clubhouse and pool were demolished in October 2025.
Tamarac bought the property from Shaker Village Condominium Association for $1,940,000 in January 2025, with support from a $1.875 million Florida Communities Trust Florida Forever Program grant. Commissioners rezoned the land from multi-family residential to recreation in January 2026, a condition of that grant.
