The American Cancer Society raised $360,000 at its “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk on the morning of Oct. 17 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise.

Survivors, caregivers and families gathered to raise money for cancer research. According to the organization, the funds support research, patient advocacy and services such as free transportation and lodging during treatment. The Channel 7 and Channel 18 Foundations sponsored the walk, and AutoNation presented a separate $100,000 check toward research.

Supporters said the event arrived at a critical time. An estimated 24,700 new breast cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in Florida this year.

Cancer survivor Olga said seeing so many people turn out along the coast meant a great deal to her. Kay Mitchell, another survivor, said the support tells patients they are not alone. Andrew Koenig, CEO of City Home, also sponsored the event. He said his mother died of cancer and urged more fundraising walks and awareness.

Meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez of 7News emceed the walk, which was part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A Miami walk is scheduled for Oct. 24 at LoanDepot Park. Residents can register at makingstrideswalk.org or text “Walk FL” to 89799. The combined fundraising goal is $900,000.
