Generations of Suncoast High School alumni are reuniting in Riviera Beach this weekend for Charger Nation Alumni Weekend, a celebration of the school’s original campus, which is slated for demolition and redevelopment.

Alumni from graduating classes dating back to 1970 kicked off the event Thursday with a homecoming football game. Friday night brings the Suncoast Legends Alumni Basketball Game at 7 p.m. at the former campus, now home to Inlet Grove Community High School, at 600 W. 28th St.

Saturday’s Charger Nation Takeover runs from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Dan Calloway Complex, 1420 W. 10th St. It is an all-class reunion open to alumni, families, friends and residents of the Riviera Beach community. The weekend also includes games, appearances by local officials, recognition of former homecoming royalty and tributes to longtime coaches, including football coach Al Sutton.

Carmen Napier, president of the Suncoast High School Alumni Association, said organizers wanted to give the campus one last tribute on their own terms. Alumni interviewed at the event described close classmates and a diverse student body. Ted Okolichany, class of 1978, said his class remains close today.

Officials said all proceeds from the weekend will go to student academic scholarships and community outreach. The celebration wraps up Sunday.
