Construction has resumed on the Everglades Townhomes project in Pahokee, a 60-unit affordable rental development that has been delayed for years. Palm Beach County officials said the work is expected to finish in the first quarter of 2027.
The push followed remarks by Pahokee resident Consuela Cunningham Benjamin at a recent county commission meeting in West Palm Beach. She urged leaders to make the project a priority and to work with the city on a clear recovery plan, funding and realistic milestones. Commissioners directed county staff to provide an update.
Carlos Serrano, deputy director of the county’s Department of Housing and Economic Development, said a dispute between the parties turned into a legal fight after construction had started. That fight stalled work for more than a year and a half. The developer later brought in a new contractor, which began building in August.
Units will be limited to households earning no more than 60% of the area median income. For a family of four, that cap is about $77,000 a year.
Serrano said the county is also backing other projects in the Glades, including One North Lake in Pahokee with 50 affordable apartments and Calusa Pointe in Belle Glade with about 160. A former South Bay vice mayor, John Wilson, said the housing shortage reaches beyond Pahokee. WPTV said no Pahokee commissioners had responded to its questions as of Monday evening.
