The rainy season officially ended October 15 across South Florida, though wet weather is returning before the week is out. This year’s season was typical for Fort Lauderdale and Key West but well below average for Miami, according to the forecast.

Rainfall has become more frequent and heavy since early September, which has eased the region’s drought. NOAA’s winter outlook, also released Thursday, calls for a wetter than normal winter because of El Niño. That brings a higher risk of severe weather and a lower chance of significant cool downs.

Friday should bring a gradual increase in clouds, with scattered showers and isolated storms mainly inland in the afternoon and near the coast in the evening. Saturday looks wetter as a front approaches from the north. With light winds and high moisture, forecasters warn of flooding and downpours, especially in the afternoon and evening. That could complicate the Miami Hurricanes game against Florida State at Hard Rock Stadium that evening.

Scattered to numerous showers are likely Sunday as the front moves south. Winds could gust to 30 mph on Sunday and Monday. Showers may linger Monday before drier air arrives midweek, bringing highs in the mid-80s.
