By day, Marcos Morillon sells ice wholesale. On select nights this Halloween season, he becomes “The Mayhem,” a character he designed himself, at Horrorland, the scream park at Jungle Island in Miami.

Horrorland is in its seventh year in South Florida. Morillon said the switch starts with colored contact lenses, including a white eye and a red one. He said the costume alone does not do it. “It looks like I’m in another dimension,” he said of the park.

His interest in horror goes back to childhood. He said his mother was a horror fan who decorated their home for occasions such as Friday the 13th. Now he works alongside other scare actors who spend the season frightening guests.

Balancing the two jobs is hard, Morillon said. “There’s only 24 hours in a day and it’s not enough,” he said. Horrorland Creative Director Luna Santos called him one of the attraction’s signature performers. Santos said many performers treat the job as a break from their everyday lives.

Morillon said pay is not his main reason for working the event. “I don’t do it for the money,” he said. Horrorland is open on select nights through Nov. 1.
