With less than three weeks until the Nov. 3 midterm elections, U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar campaigned Thursday in South Miami, where voters pressed her on affordability and immigration.
Salazar spoke to a packed room of supporters and undecided voters as she seeks reelection in Florida’s 27th Congressional District. Her Democratic challenger is Eliott Rodriguez. Salazar said people “do not have enough money in their pockets” and pointed to immigration enforcement as a top issue.
District resident Dannelle Escobar said rising prices for housing, groceries and gas are her main worry, but she said she will back the incumbent. Another voter criticized Salazar for supporting the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility without speaking out against it, and for changing her position on immigrants.
Salazar called immigration one of her signature issues. She highlighted her Dignity Act proposal and said she expects President Donald Trump to sign an immigration reform bill over the next two years.
Rodriguez said immigration is vital to the district but put the cost of living first. He said rents are too high, home buying is out of reach and insurance costs are a heavy burden.
Early voting starts Monday, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
