Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services has formed a Medical Advisory Committee made up of local physicians and health care experts, the Boca Raton agency announced Monday. The volunteer panel will advise JFS on its programs and services, offering clinical insight, expert guidance and strategic recommendations.

The committee’s first meeting will focus on new medical modalities and training initiatives. Members will get a chance to weigh in on best practices and professional input before JFS rolls out any new evidence-based practice. The group spans several disciplines, including medical, behavioral health and wellness, and several JFS staff members will also serve on it.

Dr. Sheila Furr, a psychologist, and Dr. Joanna Drowos, a family medicine physician with Florida Atlantic University, will co-chair. Other members include Florida Atlantic University doctors in psychiatry and geriatrics, a neurologist with the Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, an ophthalmologist and a pediatrician.

JFS President and CEO Danielle Hartman said the agency sometimes needs outside expertise when it considers investing in new health care technologies and therapies. Drowos praised the agency’s work in mental health, rehabilitation, food security and senior care.
