A federal jury has convicted a Pompano Beach woman of stealing more than $152,000 in Social Security benefits paid to her dead great-aunt, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced Tuesday.

Asha Anderson, 48, was found guilty of theft of government funds and Social Security fraud after a six-day trial. Prosecutors say the benefits kept arriving by direct deposit for nearly six years after the great-aunt died, because the Social Security Administration did not know of the death.

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Anderson repeatedly accessed the account between April 2017 and December 2022. She made hundreds of cash withdrawals, mostly at ATMs in Pompano Beach and Coconut Creek.

Anderson faces up to 10 years in federal prison on the theft charge and up to five years on the fraud charge. A federal judge will decide her sentence. The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General investigated the case, which is filed under case number 25-cr-60312.
