Residents across Palm Beach County can safely get rid of unused or expired prescription medications on Saturday, Oct. 24, during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The Palm Beach County Behavioral Health Coalition is hosting the event with the Drug Enforcement Administration and local groups, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Four Walgreens locations are taking part: Belle Glade, Boynton Beach, Lantana and Wellington. Drop-off is free and open to the public.
Tablets, capsules, patches and other accepted prescriptions can be brought in. Liquids must stay sealed in their original containers. Syringes, needles, sharps and illegal drugs will not be accepted. For sharps disposal questions, the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County can be reached at 561-837-5900.
Organizers said the event reduces the risk of accidental poisoning, especially for young children and pets who may mistake pills for candy. Officials also pointed to environmental concerns. A 2023 study involving Florida International University and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust found pharmaceuticals in redfish sampled from Florida waters.
Residents who cannot attend can use the year-round disposal sites listed at PBCDrop.org.
