University of Miami defensive lineman Damon Wilson posted a series of racist, homophobic and threatening direct messages he received on social media after Saturday’s double-overtime win over Florida State. The win was played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Wilson shared the messages under the caption “Glimpse into the life of a black student-athlete.” They contained racial slurs, gay slurs and violent threats, according to the report.
The sender was identified as a Florida State graduate who works in the technology department of the Florida Bar. The organization said the employee has been placed on administrative leave.
In a statement, the Florida Bar called the messages “ethically and morally reprehensible” and said they violated its internal social media policy. The bar said it is committed to enforcing its policies while protecting the employee’s due process rights.
Wilson’s teammates spoke in his defense during a session with reporters. Tight end Elijah Lofton said he would be there for Wilson “anything he needs.” Teammate Chase Smith urged the team to stay focused and block out the noise.
