A 32-year-old man was arrested Monday after police said he tried to kidnap a girl at a Miramar gas station on Sunday evening.

According to an arrest report, the incident happened at the Miramar Quick Lube gas station at 2750 S. State Road 7. Police said Michael E. Polanco grabbed the girl from behind by the neck and tried to walk away with her. The victim told investigators that Polanco had first asked someone at the station for scissors.

The girl said Polanco loosened his grip shortly afterward and walked away. Surveillance footage shows him placing his right arm around her neck and pulling her away from the public, the report said. The victim and a witness both positively identified Polanco, according to police.

Polanco was taken to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail. He faces charges of kidnapping to inflict bodily harm or terrorize a victim and battery causing bodily harm.

The arrest report offers no further details about a possible motive.
