Hundreds of dachshunds of all colors and sizes gathered Sunday morning on the Great Lawn in downtown West Palm Beach for the 12th annual Dachtoberfest. The event included a Doxie Dash dachshund racing contest and a costume contest.

Proceeds benefit Dachshund Rescue South Florida, a foster-based nonprofit that has helped more than 7,000 dogs over the past 15 years. Pam Weiner, the group’s president, said the organization works to help dachshunds and dachshund mixes whose owners can no longer care for them and who might otherwise end up as strays or in shelters.

Organizers described it as one of the largest dachshund meetups in South Florida to date.

Kristen Nguyen, founder of the Palm Beach Dachshund Club, said the group meets once a month and gives back to the community. The club also hosts “Wiener Dog Wednesdays” at O’Sheas Irish Pub.

Mitch and Robin, the owners of 11-month-old Maggie, said the breed is loving and loyal, if a little stubborn.
